Dr Toby Lincoln Gave lectures in HZNU

Dr. Toby Lincoln, the Researcher from the Center for Urban History at Leicester gave a lecture titled 'Urban Construction of Wuxi in Modern Time(1911-1954)' for students from the Faculty of Humanity, HZNU on 26 September, 2012. Prof. YUAN Chengyi - the Principal's assistant, XIA Weidong - the Director of Department of History, Lectures ZHOU Donghua, LIU Junfeng, Wang Caiyou, HU Yuehan - the researcher at Institute for Urban Studies, and the students from the Faculty of Humanity attended this seminar.

 

Dr. Toby Lincoln discussed the growth of cottage industry and the development of commerce and business in urban areas in the first place, illustrating how local government and local elites interacted with each other for Wuxi's urban planning and construction. He argues that due to the interaction and the social network owned by the local elites, Wuxi's local autonomous committee played significant positive role in local governance after 1937. In the end, he claimed that the transition happened in Wuxi during the modern time should be regarded as the reflection of capitalist industrialization on spacial demension. He reviewed the concept of Urbanization, industrialization and capitlist expansion. 

 

In discussion, participants proposed questions related to the targeted period of the reserch, issues during war times, and among others. Prof. YUAN Chengyi paid respect to Dr. Toby's long-term dedication to studying an individual case and his fluent Chinese, which helps this lecture achieve great result.
