This event is seen as one of the most important parts of “the French Years in China”.
Around the theme “the Real City and the Ideal City”, dialogue and discussions covered quite a few hot topics such as urban modernization, international experiences of urban development, urban transformation, urban cultural heritage protection and governance, ideal cities, and so on.
Presided over by Philippe MOGENTALE who is from the Cultural and Educational Cooperation Office of the French embassy in China, Emmanuel LENAIN – the French Consulate General, Qingping LI - the vice secretary of CCP in HNU, Marianne - the famous French scholar and sinologist, and Chen Yue - the Vice-director of Hangzhou International Urbanology Center delivered speeches in the opening ceremony. On behalf of HNU, Qingping Li expressed an honor for the cooperation between the French embassy and HNU on the conference which was another international event around urban issues after “the Second World Urban History Forum” in April, 2012. He expressed his wish that HNU would benefit from these conferences. It was expected that these conferences would accelerate the construction of an academic exchange platform for urban studies and level up the quality of academic research in HNU. Afterwards, Marianne BASTID-BRUGUIÈRE suggested in her speech that the policy for accelerating urbanization process should be reconsidered under the current circumstance of global urbanization. She pointed out that dialogues and experience exchanges between scholars from East Asia and Europe were significant in the reflection. After an in-depth conversation with Emmanuel LENAIN - the French Consulate General, Gaoxiang XIE -the president of HNU delivered a speech at the evening banquet. He expressed the wishes to make more extensive exchanges and cooperation with scholars all over the world and wished the conference a big success.
It was the first time for the French embassy to hold such an international conference around urban issues through cooperation with a Chinese local university. For China, during the transformation of urban structures, it is of great significance to offer such a platform for scholars around the world to exchange ideas and in-depth thoughts around urban development practice, experiences and urban future, etc. which would be sure to deepen our understanding and thinking of the profound changes of global cities. The conference would be carried on in the forms of theme reports and discussions in combination with urban historical and cultural heritage tours. The attendants would travel along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and visit the historical monuments and museums seated by the Canal. It is an expectation that the experts and scholars can get deep understanding of the culture and urban development of Hangzhou.
