Director Zhang Weiliang of the Institute for Urban Studies presided over the speech.
The History Research Center of the EHESS was founded in Paris in 1949 by the French scholar Braudel who was the representative of the second generation of the annals school –a branch of the history study school, which was also the main base for the European and world history studies. Once also as one of the members of the French Hstorical Districts Protection Committee, Mrs. Backouche focused her studies on the Paris urban history from the eighteenth century to the nineteenth century, the French cultural heritage and the function of Paris as the capital.
During the meeting, from the historical perspective, Mrs. Backouche described the protection of the historical buildings and blocks by the government of all levels and the public sectors through various kinds of laws and city planning in French history, and the formation and evolution of the concept of cultural heritage and its protection trend. With some famous dispute cases and other kinds of cases her committee handled, she further gave a vivid interpretation of the historical changes of the cultural heritage protection in France.
Also, in the meeting, the students of the history department made a heated discussion on the predicament about the Paris historical building protection in modern times, the seeking of balance between the cultural heritage protection and the traffic constructions in Paris and the relationship between the cultural heritage protection and the contemporary city life in Paris, etc. At the same time, the students discussed with Mrs. Backouche on the problems of the difficulties to keep balance between the cultural heritage protection and commercialization and to protect the former campus culture with the construction of the new University City in China so as to learn some experiences and lessons in France where there existed similar problems.
After the meeting, Mrs. Backouche and Director Zhang Weiliang of the Institute for Urban Studies held talks on the issues of the international academic cooperation and postgraduate training cooperation, etc.
