On April 10, 2012,Professor Donald Reitzes was invited to give a speech in our university for the students of the school of economics and political science. The title of the speech was “Contested Place and Home Territory: The Homeless and Atlanta’s Downtown Park”.
By introducing the concept of “sociology “, Professor Donald described the social conditions in Atlanta in view of the habits of the homeless in the Atlanta’s downtown park as well as his own living environment and life experiences. He believed that if a person took a social place as his home, he would take actions to protect it which he regarded as his own territory so as to survive better in the society.
The whole speech was simple but profound, and Donald Reitzes also made a warm discussion with the students.
